CEPHALOPODA

Cephalopods are an ancient group that first evolved sometime during the Late Cambrian. Of the many invertebrate animals, the Cephalopods are the most highly evolved. They exhibit complex behavior in a number of ways.

The Cephalopods are: Cuttlefish, Nautilus, Octopus and Squid.

Here are some of the attributes of Cephalopods:

Cephalopods are marine animals with soft bodies, with a large head and a ring of sucker-bearing tentacles.

Cephalopods have three hearts: a systematic heart that pumps blood throughout the body PLUS two brachial hearts that pump blood to the gills.

Cephalopods, to move about use a jet propulsion system and some also use arms to a lesser (slower) degree.

Cephalopods have great and amazing skills at escape, using sepia ink to put out a "smoke screen" behind which they can escape AND use camouflage to blend in with their surroundings.

Cephalopods are fast moving and from relatively intelligent to very intelligent. Octopus have been shown to perform amazing feats which demonstrate intelligence which ranks, by some, up there with dolphins, dogs, chimpanzees and other animals considered to be among the most intelligent.
