ARKANSAS QUARTZ

Arkansas is famous for many things, one of the best known is their World Class Quartz Crystals.

A person who has seen the beautiful optically clear quartz crystals from Arkansas may not realize that when these crystals come out of the ground, they don't always look like what you see at Gem & Mineral Shows.

Here is a Quartz "Burr" (i.e. the Quartz point terminations radiate in every direction, not just up or up and out) before treatment. To treat these crystals, you have to put them into a solution of warm Oxalic Acid for 1 to 2 weeks, to eat up the ferrous oxide (rust) on the surface of the crystals. A small amount of this ferrous oxide may remain, as the crystals may have grown over it so that it has become an inclusion. However, most of the surface, when soaked in Oxalic Acid will come out gleamingly beautiful.

The gold color of the ferrous oxide covered quartz crystals is in a different way, lovely in itself. Here is a sample of a quartz "Burr" prior to being acidized. [to clean the crystals, if you purchase or dig them covered with the ferrous oxide, is to get a large plastic tub, fill it reasonably full with water, then add the required amount of Oxalic Acid, place the crystals in the solution and let the Sun do its work in heating the solution. Oxalic Acid is dangerous so be certain that the solution is not where some unsuspecting person can tip it over, a pet try to drink it, or a child fall in. USE CAUTION!!!
